Perforated Ulcer

Ulcers are fairly common amongst society these days. If you suffer from a stomach, peptic or duodenal ulcer it is wise to have some knowledge of what it is and how it develops. This increased understanding enables you to see the serious complications that a perforated ulcer will cause and how to avoid this.

An ulcer is a lesion or an open wound that occurs somewhere on the body. We are going to focus in this article on those that occur in the stomach or the duodenum area. This wound is generally caused by the stomach acid enzymes eating away at the protective walls of the stomach. The resultant hole that develops is the ulcer.

Due to the stomach digestive juices that continually flow through the stomach and over the open wound, the pain from an ulcer can be extremely severe. With proper treatment, the pain from stomach and duodenum ulcers can be controlled and then healed. There are even cases where these treatments have been known to eradicate the causes of various stomach ulcers.

However there are some people who feel that the various over the counter medications that are available, coupled with some home remedies can correct their ulcer problems and sooth the pain that they experience. By taking these remedies and medications they can sometimes risk ignoring the

fact that the ulcer can develop into a perforated ulcer.

A perforated ulcer is the condition that occurs when the corrosive stomach juices have managed to eat away the entire protective wall of the stomach. When this wall has been destroyed the food and the acidic juices of the stomach will spill into the rest of the abdominal cavity.

This is a very severe situation as this abdominal cavity is not prepared for any of the complications arising from a perforated ulcer, we are simply not programmed to cope with this. Left untreated this perforated ulcer will develop into peritonitis. This condition is the name given to an inflammation of the abdominal cavity and wall and this is an extremely serious condition which requires corrective surgery.

When you first suspect that you have an ulcer you should obtain a firm diagnosis from your doctor and start taking the various corrective medications as soon as possible. This will give you more chance of keeping your ulcer at a controllable level. The more serious aspect of any ulcer will only develop if you do not get proper help soon enough.

Remember that a perforated ulcer can be life threatening so it is very wise to seek immediate medical help if you even suspect that you may have a perforated ulcer.
