Oesophageal Ulcers

There are many different types of ulcer that may affect us at given times during our lives. A pretty nasty one, (although none are pleasant to experience), is an esophageal ulcer, this is a hole that has formed in the lining of the esophagus. In the case of an esophageal ulcer, this lining commonly becomes corroded by the acidic juices in the stomach. The ulcers can also be formed by a bacterium called H. pyloridus.

Esophageal ulcers are generally found in the lower section of the esophagus. These ulcers are also associated with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease or GERD. While these oesophageal ulcers can be extremely painful, they are at least, not contagious. It is however possible that oesophageal ulcers are symptoms of other diseases or conditions.

Besides H. pyloridus there are other reasons why oesophageal ulcers form. For example it is possible that the constant use of anti-inflammatory medications, smoking cigarettes and chewing tobacco, even bulimia can contribute to the development of an oesophageal ulcer. In addition individuals suffering with oesophageal ulcers may develop iron deficiency anaemia.

To detect whether you have an esophageal ulcer a diagnosis is made with a barium x-ray or an endoscopy examination. Should these tests indicate that you do have an oesophageal ulcer then you will need to have it treated as soon as possible, as the complications that can arise from untreated esophageal ulcers include bleeding and perforation.

There are also some treatments that you can use to destroy the presence of the H. pyloridus bacteria. The use of these treatments will eliminate the risk factors that are involved with esophageal

ulcers and these treatments can also prevent complications from occurring.

Some of the symptoms of oesophageal ulcers include heartburn and inflammation of the esophagus. A slight bleeding may occur, leading to the vomiting of blood that is bright red in colour or experiencing coffee ground colour, black and dark, tarry stools. This type of stool condition is called melena. Should your esophageal bleeding be rapid then the blood discharge in the stools will be a bright red colour.

Other symptoms of oesophageal ulcers can include nausea, abdominal indigestion and abdominal cramping. This abdominal pain can even sometimes awaken you at night. It can generally be relieved by the use of antacids or sometimes by drinking milk. You may experience the pains of the oesophageal ulcer about 2 to3 hours after eating and sometimes these pains occur or become worse if you do not eat any food.

The final oesophageal ulcer symptoms are correlated together. They are appetite and weight loss. For anyone who has oesophageal ulcers or suspects that this may be the case, the wisest course of action that you can take is to consult a doctor and explain your symptoms and that you suspect that you have an esophageal ulcer.

This will enable the doctor to perform the diagnostic tests that can inform you if you are suffering from oesophageal ulcers or if you have any other medical condition that needs treatment as well. Remember that any oesophageal ulcers that have been left untreated can eventually become life threatening. Do not wait until complications arise to see your doctor, there is treatment that can help alleviate this pain for you.
