Duodenal Ulcer Symptoms

It can be quite common to suffer from various forms of ulcers over the course of our lives. A certain type of ulcer may form in the duodenum. The duodenum is the first part of the small intestines. Usually the duodenum and the rest of the small intestines digest the food in our stomachs using the enzymes that our bodies have in place to help with this function. However occasionally a problem will occur that in turn causes these enzymes to form a duodenal ulcer. If this is the case, how will we be able to recognize duodenal ulcer symptoms?

Generally the duodenum and the rest of the small intestines help our bodies to digest the food that is in the stomach. They do this with chemicals called enzymes. It is these enzymes which break the food particles up so that they can be absorbed by our bodies. The enzymes do not cause any problems to our stomach because they are designed to work together with this part of our system, but if there is some problem that causes the enzymes to break through the protective barrier between the stomach and the duodenum then the chances of a duodenal ulcer developing become pretty high.

To prevent such an occurrence it may help us to understand duodenal ulcer symptoms. These symptoms may include a pain in the upper abdomen area that is just below the breastbone. This pain is one of the most common duodenal ulcer symptoms. You may experience this pain occurring before

meals or when you begin to feel hungry. In some cases, the pain can also awaken you from your sleep.

Bloating, vomiting and nausea can also be duodenal ulcer symptoms. There are other symptoms that you may experience like feeling very full after you have eaten your meals. Sometimes the pain can become worse after you have eaten. It is best to understand that these duodenal ulcer symptoms are warnings from our bodies and that we would be wise to seek medical advice or at least change our eating habits at this point to see if this will help ease the symptoms.

If we do not seek treatment for this condition there are various complications that can happen as a result of ignoring the duodenal ulcer symptoms. One such complication can be bleeding from the ulcer. This bleeding can be anything from a trickle to a life threatening blood loss. The other complication that can occur is if the ulcer perforates the wall of the duodenum. This will cause food and stomach acids to leak into areas that are not able to cope with this attack, causing intense pain, inflammation and infection.

Although, thank goodness the majority of people will not experience these complications, as they can be very serious, it is advisable to see your doctor if you have any of the duodenal ulcer symptoms, to find out what you can do to treat or even at an early enough stage, to prevent duodenal ulcers from forming.
