A headache is a condition of mild to severe pain in the head; sometimes upper back or neck pain may also be interpreted as a headache.

Chronic tension headaches

While a tension headache feels like a tight band has been placed around your head, at least the pain from the tension headache does go away after a little while. Imagine though, having to suffer from a tension headache every day. When this occurs, such tension are classified as being chronic tension headaches. This is because the pain symptoms can be experienced for up to 15 days in a month or even over a period of several months.

With chronic tension the symptoms are similar to that of a regular tension headache only the sufferer describes that the pain never seems to go away. People who have experienced chronic tension describe this pain feeling as if they were always wearing a pressure band at some level around their heads. Other people have even described severe chronic tension headache pain as being like wearing a heavy hooded cape that is weighted down onto their shoulders.

When experiencing both regular tension and chronic tension the pain can be located in the forehead region, the sides of the head and / or at the back of the head. Suffered at regular strength a chronic tension headache will be a dull, aching pain, sometimes feeling like a type of pressure or tightness. This pain is usually mild to moderately intense so we are able to function to varying levels whilst experiencing it.

person, just like with other / painful conditions. Many people who suffer from chronic tension find that they begin immediately upon waking up in the morning. Others have reported that although they have no pain on waking, their chronic tension begin in the early part of the day.

Unlike normal tension headaches, fortunately, chronic tension are much less common. However, twice as many women as men suffer from chronic tension headaches. Although the duration and the severity of the pain is about the same as experienced with a normal tension headache, the pain from a chronic tension headache is more debilitating because it is a daily occurrence and is almost continuous in duration.

Researchers have found that people who suffer from chronic tension are likely to be more susceptible to anxiety and depression than non-sufferers. It is also known that chronic tension occur during or even after heightened periods of stress and anxiety. Anyone who suffers from a mood disorder like depression or anxiety should seek treatment for these conditions as part of having their chronic tension investigated.

With the proper medical advice and treatment people who suffer from chronic tension can lead normal and fulfilling lives. In time they may even come to understand what triggers their so that they can learn how to prevent the onset of any more chronic tension headaches.
