Causes of Migraine headaches

Any type of headache can be very painful to the sufferer. But some headaches, like migraines, can cause more problems than just a headache. Typically a migraine sufferer will experience nausea, light sensitivity and a severely throbbing pain in the head, sometimes described like a hammering feeling. Most often, this type of headache pain is felt on one side of the head, although at times the pain will occur on both sides. The actual causes of migraine have not really been defined as of yet.

There are however, a few theories as to why we experience migraine headaches. The most common theory is that migraines are caused by a change in the blood flow within the brain that triggers the pain. The other theory about migraine headache is thought to be a problem with the pain sensing nerve releasing chemicals into the bloodstream, called neuropeptides.

Many medical professionals speculate that the release of neuropeptides relaxes the smooth muscle surrounding the cranial blood vessels. This relaxation causes the cranial blood vessels to dilate or become constricted. This sequence in turn increases the flow of blood and other cranial fluid to the brain and it is the presence of these increased fluids that are thought to be the causes of migraine headaches.

These increased amounts of cranial fluids cause inflammation, pain sensitivity, tissue and blood vessel swelling during migraine headaches. Some researchers believe that the aura that is usually seen during a migraine headache is caused by the constriction of blood vessels that became dilated during the

Another theory as to the causes of migraine is that they can be linked to genetics and thereby inherited to some extent. These theories show that a child of a migraine sufferer will have a 50% chance of themselves experiencing migraine headaches. The chances are even higher of inheriting migraine if both parents are known to suffer from this painful condition.

Indeed when both parents are known to suffer frequent migraine headaches, the chances of the child inheriting migraine headache symptoms rises to about 70%. Until now however, even though some professionals believe that inheritance can play such a large part in migraine the genes that could then be considered as the cause of migraine have not been identified or even isolated.

At the start of a migraine headache, the first warning signs that we are likely to receive are a throbbing pain in the temple area and some level of nausea. As the migraine symptoms progress the pain of the headache intensifies. Unfortunately since the causes of migraine have not been found and we don’t know what can trigger these attacks, there are not many medications available to treat these headaches, although there are a couple of over the counter medications and some that can be prescribed by doctors, these have varying degrees of success for individual sufferers. Often the recommendation involves limiting or giving up certain foods such as chocolate and cheese that have been found to contain enzymes that can trigger an attack.
