Hair Growth Products
When you pick up almost any magazine today and look through the advertisement sections, you will probably see at least one advertisement for hair growth products. But do these products, natural or otherwise actually work? Is it really possible to promote hair growth?
As far as I am currently aware there is no medical evidence available that either proves or disproves the success of hair growth products. What these products are most likely to do is stimulate the hair follicles in your scalp so that when your hair does grow, it is healthier and stronger than it was previously. This is not such a bad pay-off.
Most popular hair growth products are used externally in the form of a scalp application of some kind. They usually work by thoroughly cleansing your scalp thereby removing any build up of proteins. This combined with the act of massaging your scalp when applying the product stimulates the hair follicles and blood circulation, eventually encouraging hair growth.
There are some hair growth products that need to be taken orally. Most of these products will contain the vitamins required for healthy hair such as vitamin B6 or B12, zinc or copper. All of these vitamins are needed by your body in order to maintain healthy, strong hair.
If you are thinking about trying one of the many hair growth products available, check on the packaging that the product has been approved by the FDA before you purchase. You then know that it has been fully tested
in proper, objective clinical trials and any side effects that have occurred have been documented. In addition, reading the package clearly will tell you if it is indeed a hair growth product or a hair thickening product, as the two can be easily confused.
Back in 2001, in America, two hair restoration treatments were approved by the FDA. If one of these is listed on the packet as an ingredient, then you are likely to stand a better chance of it working. The two ingredients that have been approved are finasteride and minoxidil.
Typically, Finasteride (or Propecia) is only available on prescription and is prescribed mainly to men. Minoxidil (or Rogaine) is available over the counter from pharmacies, but tends to be more effective for women than men. Whilst Minoxidil tends to be used in external applications, applied to the scalp, Finasteride is usually taken orally.
Whether or not you decide to choose one of the many hair growth products on the market is, of course, a personal decision. All I will recommend is that you read the packaging carefully both before you buy as well as before you start the treatment. I would recommend that you consult a trained medical professional before you begin to ascertain if your hair loss is caused by a temporary, transient, condition or if it is likely to be more long lasting and also to obtain advice as to which is likely to have the most beneficial effects on your condition and the least likely side effects.
