Vascular headaches

While the majority of us will have heard of tension and migraines, there are fewer amongst us who will have heard about vascular headaches. These are thought of as being caused by an abnormal function within the brain. The really interesting thing about vascular is that migraines, severe tension and blood pressure are all considered by the medical world, as part of the vascular headache class.

Vascular occur when the blood vessels in the brain are adversely affected. This constriction and enlarging of the vessels allows blood to flow to the brain in a less controlled manner than is usual which leads to the pain and symptoms experienced by sufferers. The condition known as vascular contains several different types of headache. These are defined as; tension vascular headaches, migraine vascular headaches, toxic vascular and cluster vascular headaches.

Tension become tension vascular when the pain develops into a severe pulsating condition. As a rule, tension have a steady, dull, aching pain occurring in both sides of the head. This pain is defined as a tension vascular headache when the strength of the pain deepens in its intensity.

Some tension vascular headache sufferers describe the pain as feeling as if their head was encased in a vice that is continuously tightening. The pain usually starts off very gradually but as time passes it increases. Having said this, even though the pain is very severe and is distracting, it does not have the same

debilitating effect as migraines.

When a migraine becomes severe to the point of being disabling it will be defined as a migraine vascular headache. This is when the sensation of the pain is a continuous throbbing or pulsating wave. In addition to the regular migraine symptoms, when you reach the stage of vascular migraine headache, there may be other symptoms including numbness, tingling in the face and arms and increased vision changes.

These secondary symptoms are known as an aura and they act as the body’s early warning call preparing us for the onslaught of a migraine headache. If no form of medication is taken, the severity of migraine vascular will remain constant and they have been known to last for more than 3 days.

Cluster are a rare but very painful type of headache, occuring in groups or clusters, hence the name. Frequent Cluster also come under the umbrella of the vascular headaches. In this condition, an attack can last for weeks or months before it subsides. There will be a period of remission followed by another cluster headache. Cluster symptoms are; sharp penetrating pain, red and teary eyes and a congested nose.

The last of the vascular is known as toxic headache. This occurs as the result of a fever accompanying a very serious illness. Some of the sicknesses that can induce toxic are severe tonsillitis, pneumonia, mumps and measles. In some cases it has also been known for toxic chemicals such as lead, chemical solvents and alcohol to cause vascular headaches.
