Sinus headaches

Whenever we have a stuffy nose we worry that we may be starting a cold. At these moments we’re likely to begin treatment to prevent this. Often times these medications will provide some temporary relief from the symptoms of the “cold” but they may tend to ignore the underlying cause. This is because a stuffed up nose can be the cause of a sinus headache.

A sinus headache occurs only when the sinus passage becomes congested with too much mucus. As the sinus passage is hollow it provides your nose with another way of breathing but this passage way is lined with membranes that create mucus. Ordinarily this is not too much of a problem because the nasal openings at the ends of your nose allows the mucus to drain away without causing too many problems.

In general a sinus headache will be caused by the fact that some swelling has occurred in the sinus cavity. This swelling can be felt around the nose and the eyes. Other causes of sinus are various allergies or infections such as hay fever. If you are suffering from any sinus headache that has been caused by an allergy or an infection, there is a strong chance that you may develop a fever, stuffy nose or even toothaches in combination.

Sinus headache pain is described as being of varying levels, it can manifest as a dull, deep or even severe pain but is always located in the front of the face and the head. The inflammation in the sinus passage causes pain around the cheeks, eyes and the nose areas. Bending down or leaning over is found to greatly increase the severity of the pain in these areas as it puts increased pressure

on the swollen membranes.

Sometimes sinus headache pain manifests more in cold weather conditions. Dampness is also a contributing factor for sinus headaches. Often a sinus headache will be very painful in the morning hours and generally eases somewhat towards the afternoon. There are two other types of that are sometimes mistaken for sinus headaches.

These are vascular and migraine headaches. Many sufferers of migraine have reported that their migraine cause similar types of head pain and sometimes nasal congestion. People who experience this, also find that changes in the weather or season can contribute towards their migraine headaches.

The best way to treat sinus is by finding the underlying cause. Once this problem has been identified and treated it can greatly alleviate the occurrence of sinus headaches. For example, the underlying cause could be due to an allergy or an infection, in these cases, the use off nasal vasoconstrictors and analgesic medication may be beneficial. When the condition has been cleared then any necessary treatment for sinus headache pain can begin.

While a sinus headache is problematic for the sufferer, the condition is completely treatable. Likewise they are often merely annoying rather than debilitating ones. If we develop an understanding of our bodies and the various factors that can lead to sinus headaches, we can find ways to prevent any future episodes of sinus headache pain. Once we have this knowledge at our disposal, we can achieve a sinus headache free life.
