Cluster headaches

Fortunately for most of us, our headache symptoms can be treated with over the counter medication. However, there are times when the headache pain suffered is too severe to respond to this. One type of headache that can cause severe pain is the condition known as Cluster headaches.

This condition is pretty rare, but is symptomised by a very severe, localised group of sharp stabbing pains which can last from anywhere between 15 minutes and 3 hours at a time. Cluster Headaches as you would expect from the name, occur in groups or clusters.

Generally Cluster Headaches occur near one of the eyes or temples. Other symptoms of Cluster Headaches can include drooping eyelids, red and watery eyes, and nasal congestion on the affected side of the face. It is possible to experience Cluster Headaches in either side of the head as they are unilateral.

Sufferers of Cluster Headaches also complain of having a stiff or tender neck, and suffering from jaw and teeth pain. Cluster Headaches are another of a primary group of where the cause is not fully understood. It is known that Cluster Headaches occur frequently and that while they are of a relatively short duration, whilst present, they cause the sufferer severe to excruciating pain.

When experiencing Cluster Headaches, the pain is strictly one sided and extremely intense. The pain is develops around the eyes and can radiate from that region as part of the Cluster effect. It may occur once or more often during any day. Although as a rule

a Cluster Headache will develop at night and last for about 30 to 60 minutes per episode.

There is a condition where Cluster Headaches will occur episodically as well. These will be of a 6 to 12 week duration. During this period the sufferer will experience their attack of Cluster Headaches about once during a year possibly for two years. During this condition, the pain symptoms will develop at the same time each episode.

With episodic Cluster Headaches then, the pain can strike at the same time for several weeks. This episode of several weeks will be followed by a length of pain free time. The pain free period may last for weeks or even years. Chronic Cluster Headache sufferers on the other hand will experience multiple everyday, sometimes for a period of many years.

Cluster Headaches have also been called alarm clock headaches, due to their ability to wake the sufferer from a sound night’s sleep, other names for this condition are Horton’s syndrome and even, suicide headaches. This last name is in reference to the excruciating pain suffered and the desperation people feel to end the pain.

While medical science has described Cluster Headaches as being benign, for the person who has to live with this pain the attacks are extremely painful and debilitating. There are, however, medications that have been specially designed to treat Cluster Headaches, so if you experience this type of pain, consult with your medical doctor as soon as possible to provide relief.
