Anxiety | Panic Disorder

The symptoms of panic can hit any one of us at certain times. This is created by a normal human defence mechanism called the ‘fight or flight’ instinct. This particular defensive mechanism is controlled by our autonomic nervous system and has actually helped humans to evolve over the years. However, these days, our suddenly stress filled lives can bring unwanted anxieties into our orbit and it’s when these anxieties repeatedly occur that they can turn into an panic disorder.

So we have established that and panic symptoms can strike anyone at any time, however, for some people these attacks can be extremely debilitating as their entire life eventually becomes centred on waiting for the next panic attack to strike. This is because the symptoms can be so severe that they can even make you feel that you’re experiencing a stroke or a heart attack, and even that you’re dying. When you seek medical help and then it appears that no physical reason for these symptoms can be found, then you’re simply left to wonder why this happened to you and worse, when the next attack may happen. As you’re unable to predict the next attack you become extremely anxious which sometimes becomes a lingering and intense worry that your next attack could happen the next minute.

You can see why these intense emotions can keep you on a roller coaster of and panic. Unfortunately, the more these symptoms are repeated, the more your brain begins to dictate how you should live so as not to experience any more panic attacks. Eventually this situation spirals into full blown panic disorder.

The symptoms of panic disorder include pounding

heart, weakness, feelings of being faint, and dizziness. Your hands may feel numb or they may tingle as the nerve endings are affected. You will experience chest pains, smothering sensations, and a sense of unreality, of losing touch with your immediate surroundings. As we mentioned earlier, and as you can now see, all of these feelings may easily lead you to believe that you are having a heart attack, a stroke or even dying.

Anxiety panic disorder attacks can occur at any time. These attacks can last anywhere from a few minutes up to 10 minutes and there are even more rare cases where a case of panic disorder can last for about an hour.

For people who suffer from panic disorder there are other maladies that may need to be treated as well. Depression and alcoholism are some of the potentially accompanying illnesses, and sometimes panic attacks can create phobias as well. Generally this type of phobia will be related to the place where a panic attack first happened. This experience can even sometimes cause an panic disorder sufferer to restrict their lives so they avoid situations that might invite another attack.

If you suffer from an panic disorder you’ll know just how debilitating it can be. The good news is that an panic disorder sufferer has a number of options to choose from these days to help them to either learn to cope with their condition or to find a fitting cure. The first step is in obtaining a diagnosis for your panic disorder and accepting that there really are professional medical doctors and trained therapists that can help you to overcome this if you approach them.
